Berman Brothers: Unlocking More Value From Existing Solar Assets

Berman Brothers is one of South Africa's established property developers, known for developing and managing luxury and premium residential properties across Cape Town. With a growing portfolio of high-value developments, reliable energy performance is essential to maintaining operational efficiency and protecting long-term asset value.
Berman Brothers had already invested in solar across its portfolio.
The system was operational and generating energy, but like many businesses managing solar internally, there was limited visibility into whether the assets were performing at their full potential.
Maintenance was handled internally, monitoring was limited, and there was no dedicated solar asset management partner responsible for continuously improving performance.
Most importantly, no one was accountable for the energy that wasn't being generated.

Recognising the need for a more proactive approach, Berman Brothers began evaluating specialist providers who could improve performance, strengthen oversight, and maximise the long-term value of their solar assets.
Why Candi’s Solar Protect+?
Unlike traditional O&M providers, Candi Solar's Solar Protect+ model starts with a detailed assessment period.
Over two months, the team reviewed historical performance data, inspected the sites, assessed compliance requirements, audited documentation, and identified opportunities to improve generation.
The findings revealed that while the underlying assets were in good condition,
Several opportunities existed to improve performance, close compliance gaps and improve long-term asset value
Following the assessment, Candi Solar delivered a detailed retrofit and optimisation plan covering:
Once approved, the improvements were implemented and the sites were integrated into Candi Solar's asset management platform.

The Results?6 Months In and a 17% Increase in Generation
Within six months of takeover, the sites were already generating significantly more energy.
[uplift-bar]
Through a combination of performance optimisation, improved monitoring, corrective actions and proactive maintenance, generation increased by 17% compared to the historical baseline.
Key improvements included:
Without adding a single solar panel, the system generated more energy, reduced dependence on grid electricity, and increased the value delivered by the existing asset.
What makes Solar Protect+ different?
Most O&M contracts focus on keeping a solar plant operational.
Solar Protect+ gives businesses one local partner responsible for monitoring, maintenance, optimisation and performance - reducing operational complexity while improving results.
Customers receive:
- An outperformance guarantee backed by Candi Solar
- Shared upside when the system outperforms expectations
- A comprehensive technical assessment
- A detailed retrofit and optimisation roadmap
- Continuous monitoring and performance analytics
- Compliance and documentation management
- Quarterly performance reporting
The result is a model where Candi Solar succeeds only when the customer's solar asset performs better.

The Outcome
For Berman Brothers, Solar Protect+ transformed solar from a maintenance exercise into a managed performance asset.
Six months after implementation, generation is already tracking 17% above historical levels, with improved oversight, stronger compliance, greater transparency, and a clear partner accountable for performance.
Because solar should not just work. It should continuously improve.
The challenge
Lower electricity costs
In 2025 alone, the system delivered:

R622,159
in electricity savings

1.4 GWH
of clean energy generated

1,800 TONNES
of CO₂ emissions avoided
The result is not only a more resilient operation, but a more cost-efficient and sustainable one too
One Successful Phase Deserves Another

The performance of the first phase gave Bracken Timbers the confidence to go further.
Following its success, the company approved an additional 540 kWp expansion. Once complete, the expanded system is expected to increase annual electricity savings to approximately R1.1 million, while covering even more of the sawmill's daytime energy needs.
Every time the power went out, production slowed. Delivery schedules became harder to maintain, customer commitments came under pressure, and the disruption extended far beyond the factory floor - to suppliers, customers and the company's 1,500-strong workforce.
The team explored generating electricity using its own wood waste, including sawdust and bark. While it was technically possible, building, operating and maintaining an energy plant would require specialist expertise outside its core business.
Bracken Timbers knew what it needed: a reliable energy solution and an experienced partner to make it happen.

The solution
Candi Solar designed and financed a 1.5 MWp solar installation through its Performance-Linked Instalment Sale (PLIS) model.
In simple terms, Bracken Timbers did not need to make a heavy upfront investment or take on the operational risk of managing a solar plant.
Instead, the business pays for the energy the system generates, while Candi takes responsibility for its performance, maintenance and long-term optimisation.
That means the Bracken Timbers team can remain focused on what it does best: producing quality structural timber - while its solar system gets on with producing reliable, more affordable energy.

The impact
Production Keeps Moving
The solar system was integrated with Bracken Timbers' existing backup generators, helping the sawmill continue operating for full nine-hour shifts during load shedding.
So, while grid interruptions continue to bring production to a halt for many manufacturers, Bracken Timbers can keep its mill running, stay on schedule and continue fulfilling customer orders.
Most importantly, this increased energy stability helps protect consistent employment for more than 1,500 people.
“
The partnership has delivered exactly what was promised. As the solar system operates over time, the financial and operational benefits will only continue to grow.
